Jesus Camp = Lots of Questions
Wednesday, 18 October 2006
The stir surrounding the recent release of the documentary "Jesus Camp" has found just has many fans as naysayers. The film follows the charismatic Christian summer camp for children. Debuting at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival and later purchased by A&E Indie Films the documentary has raised many questions about what authentic worship and spirituality is for youth. The controversy surrounding the film started with an October 2006 CNN report.

Located just outside Devils Lake, North Dakota, ironically enough, Becky Fisher who is the children's pastor at "Kid's on Fire" summer camp strives to show the real life stories of three dynamically charismatic youth in her children's ministry in the documentary. At the camp, Fischer stresses the need for children to purify themselves in order to be used by God. She strongly believes that children need to be in the forefront of turning America back to conservative Christian values. The result is often very charismatic behvaviors from children who many believe have been brainwashed into a false sense of spirituality.

The film which was produced by Magnolia Pictures continues to draw lines between those who believe in the film's authenticity and others who find this type of involvement by children just a bit too far.

Christianity Does Not Equal Politics

For the most interesting reason we find ourselves at a crossroad. Our faith has turned into a political system, which to me offers some interesting ideas. America was NOT a Christian nation...it was not started as a Christian nation. If anything the founders of this country were simply theists...they believed in a God...but are we talking about the same God..are we dealing with the same kind of faith...the deep profound loving faith in Jesus Christ..the one who saved us from our sins. Christianity is not a political system...bottom line...you can't legislate morality.

I think it's irrelevant whether this country was "started" as a Christian nation. The purpose of all things in God's creation is to glorify God, and we as His creation to know Him. Just because a country was not founded on Christianity or even with that mindset has nothing to do with the fact that it still has a desperate need for God. The entire idea of "government" was first initiated by God himself in the Old Testament in Israel. In that model, the structure was set so that trustworthy men would be in roles of spiritual authority over others. These men were considered wise by their peers and worthy of their position by God. The morality that was "legislated" in that time period was not a construct of men, it was God's character that was the guideline. God was still given final say in all things. The reason why have been dragged down to such low moral standards politically, is because final say is given to man. We could even argue that it would be impossible to decide on what standards of morality we would go by, but could you imagine what would happen if in this country all we did was legislate the Ten Commandments?! To start just with them as a plumbline would possibly begin to set this country back in the right direction. Plus, it's not like they're the Ten Suggestions, if anything it would provide some sort of solid Biblical standard to a society where Christianity is all but completely gray.
What the film is about

The film is not about kids who exhibit charismatic behaviors or have somehow received a "gift" it is about adults forcing impressionable children into acting and thinking a certain way. Although children must be guided by adults in their choices, I don't think the emotionally manipulative atmosphere of the camp (to say nothing of adults simply holding children by the shoulders and screaming what to do in their little ears) results in anything but a warped behavioral response, certainly not a religious conversion. This country was founded on the idea of inividual freedom. The cloudy part is how much freedom should CHILDREN have and what limits should be placed on the power adults exercise over them.
